Sadie And Maud Contd.

The poem, "Sadie and Maud" by Gwendolyn Brooks is very similar to the play "Madea" that we read in class. Madea represents the double bind factor that affects women. She is known to be crazy and dangerous because she is smart and clever but is she had followed the societal rules, Jason would have still left her or treated her like a second class citizen. Women like Sade, Maud and Madea are expected to follow impossible standards. No matter how smart of successful they may become it is all the same according to society.

  1. The double Bind for women that we discussed in class is an issue that I am very passionate about. The Last sentence in your introduction paragraph of your blog where you say, “No matter how smart of successful they may become it is all the same according to society”, is a perfect depiction of how unfair the double bind is. A woman should be allowed and she also be encouraged to be successful at anything. The parallel that you drew between “Madea” and Sadie and Maud” was very clever. Since the settings of both pieces of literature are so different, I would have not drawn that connection, but it is a very good one. I like how you point out that Brooks is not afraid to write about any subject. I also like how you talk about how Brooks demonstrates emotions in all of her work and is never afraid to tackle any emotion. Her work is extremely unique and also extremely inspiring!

  2. Thank you, I too believe that this is why Brooks is a great poet. She is bold and talented. I am glad you agree with my statement that women are in a perpetual state of being in a double bind. Women can never achieve certain goals are greatness easily because such unfair standards are set forth for them to follow.

  3. I really like the layout of your blog. Draws your attention in and keeps it. I was just wondering why you chose to be Gwendolyn Brooks for your profile name? I think that it is really neat that you chose to do that and it shows how a real blog from this author would work. Great job!

  4. Well Gwendolyn Brooks is a great poet and I wanted to demonstrate that with a simple blog that drew your attention to her work and my opinion of it. I choose to make this blog as if it is her real blog because it makes what I say and research about the author a bit more real and convincing. Of course everything on here about Gwendolyn is true but I wanted her attitude to how too. You can definitely get a feel of the author by reading her, "About me" section on this blog. Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my blog!
